Statue of Matthias Corvinus - Cluj Napoca
Next to St Michael's Church, Piata Unirii, is a huge bronze casting of the Hungarian King, Matthias I (1443-1490), mounted on a horse, high on a pedestal. Surrounding him are his generals holding flags of military battalions they have defeated. The work was conceived by Janos Fadusz and opened in 1902. The sculptor added his own face to one the warriors at Matthias's side (figure on the far right). Matthias was born in Cluj Napoca.
