Lake Kussharo is a caldera lake in the Akan National Park in eastern Hokkaido. It is the largest lake in Japan by surface area and the largest to completely freeze over in winter. The island, Nakajima, is a strato volcano. In winter a whooper swan colony, attracted by thermal activity, comes to the lake from Siberia.
