Morioka

The Ishiwariakura (rock splitting cherry tree) is one of Morioka's most famous symbols of the spirit. Taking root in a small crack in a granite boulder, it grew, eventually splitting the boulder in half. Growing for the past 200-400 years its delicate petals come and fall each April. It wasn designated a national treasure in 1923.
