Haragosha Jinja, Sakurajima

The three meter high tori gate on Sakurajima was completely buried by ash and pumice stone during the 1914 volcanic eruption. Rediscovered by builders contructing a new school it was left partially buried as a memorial. Lava flows from the same eruption joined the island of Sakurajima to Kyushu.
